So for my November Acteens Meeting, I decided to take a break from the Mission Quest and discuss Prayer. This will basically be my “lesson plan” for the night and will have some pictures of activities we will do and all the scripture we will discuss. All scripture is NKJV unless otherwise noted.

‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’

-Jeremiah 33:3

To me personally, this verse means that if we pray to God, He is going to answer our prayers. May not be how we want but He will answer. There’s a country song called “Unanswered Prayers” by Garth Brooks. In the song he says that he thanks God for not answering his prayers. This is one way that in my eyes God really does answer us. He knows what is best for us and if we just pray to Him, somehow and someday He is going to do great things for us- whether it be finding our true love or finally getting that job we wanted. On the other hand, He could answer us by NOT giving us what we think we want and need.

11 Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore!

-1 Chronicles 16:11

I don’t think I know anybody that can be optimistic 24/7. I can say personally that right now I am in Physical Therapy. There are days when the second I wake up I am hurting and I want nothing more than to curl up in bed and go back to bed but I can’t. I have to get up, go to physical therapy, and go to class. I don’t know how in the world I will make it through the day on days like this. The only way I do and the only thing I can do is pray to God. He will NEVER give me more than I can handle, but He will push me- it’s what helps me to grow and remember that He is always here for me,  no matter what.

Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;

-Colossians 4:2

We are getting ready to celebrate the holiday that we do nothing but be thankful all day. When you are praying, always remember to be thankful. Thank God for the life you have that day, your family, the shelter and food you have, the opportunities you have, etc. Everyone likes to be thanked, why wouldn’t God.

16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

-James 5:16

Okay, so who lives a perfect life? NOT ME. Nobody but Jesus ever has lived a perfect life. Make it a point to sit down every day/ night and think about all the sins you committed, and yes little white lies count. When you sit down to pray, tell God your sins, sincerely ask for forgiveness, pray for the people around you and those who you know need prayer. Every little prayer is heard by God and makes a difference.

You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

-James 4:3

When most of us were little if we prayed we may of occasionally said something along these lines: “Dear God, If you’ll just have mom and dad let me stay the night with my best friend tonight I PINKIE PROMISE I won’t lie anymore, ever again. I know I said that last time but I really mean it  this time!” We have all said something along these lines, as you get older you may ask God for a new car in exchange for no more gossiping. Does God actually answer those prayers? God is going to do what He KNOWS is best for us. Is getting this new, shiny, expensive car what is always best for us, of course it’s not and He knows this. So when you are angry at God because He did not answer your prayer, ask yourself if it was going to glorify Him and do Him good.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

-1 John 1:9

We can be forgiven. Isn’t that just a nice thought. When you know you’ve done something wrong and someone knows that you have done something, don’t you just feel so ashamed. Don’t you want nothing more than for that person to just forget what happened and to forgive you? That’s what God has done. He sent Jesus to die on a cross for EVERYONE in the world so that if they wanted that forgiveness for all of the wrongs they’ve done, they could have it.

Tips for Praying

I personally have been known to keep a Prayer Journal. This is just something where as my day goes by and I have something or someone I want to pray for, I pull out my journal, write that request down and usually wind up writing out my entire prayer instead of just saying it in my head. One reason I do this is because you really have to mean what you are saying or asking for in order to write it down. Also because it is really neat to be able to open your journal up and turn to a page, read it and see how some of your prayers may have been answered. This may not be for everyone, but for some this can be enjoyable, a stress reliever, and a nice memory. The following is a picture of an easy way to remember 6 things to help you form a prayer. REMEMBER: there is no right or wrong way to pray. I am also going to list out these tips. (Click on the picture to make it larger).

1. Praise God

2. Confess Your Sins

3. Thank God

4. Pray for Others

5. Pray for Yourself (yes that’s allowed 🙂 )

6. Close

Prayer Rock

All of  the girls in my class on Sunday will receive a “Prayer Rock”. Each rock will say Pray on the front along with one of the verses that we discussed. On the back it will have the name of another girl in the class. The two girls will be accountability partners. This rock is something they can put in their purse, on their dresser  in the bathroom, where ever they will be reminded to pray and to pray for one of their friends. Hopefully, each accountability partner group can form a stronger friendship with each other and be able to trust each other enough to talk to each other when they need someone and to have someone to go to for Christian advice.
